LAKE DISTRICT - 29 Octubre

Después de mi experiencia en Liverpool, decidí comprar tickets para más excursiones de ese tipo, y este domingo ha tocado el Lake District. Es el parque nacional más importante del Reino Unido. Empezamos en Windermere, donde hicimos un crucero de unos 45 minutos por el lago. Esta vez éramos sólo tres: Rosa, Edurne (una chica de Tarragona que no conocíamos aún)y yo. El crucero estuvo genial, todo muy bonito, parecía Finlandia a veces. Después de eso fuimos al punto de información turística, donde Edurne compró lo que se suponía era un mapa para dar una vuelta de hora y media por la montaña. Bien, el paseíto lo dimos, y fue una pasada, pero el mapa no servía de mucho (y ademas era del '99!!). Ya veréis las vistas en las fotos!!

Llegamos justo a tiempo al bus, y así nos dirigimos a Ambleside, donde vimos una catarata de 20 metros bastante espectacular, y luego dimos una vuelta cerca del lago Windermere. Todo era muy guapo, la verdad es que valió la pena ir y no quedarse por la ciudad en sí, que tenía poca cosa jeje. Acabamos reventaos, claro, y tras tres horas o más de camino de vuelta, cenamos la típica pizza en el Bar One y a casa a descansar!!

La semana que viene iré a Stratford-upon-Avon, donde nació Shakespeare y además un lugar muy bonito, según parece. También tenemos ya entradas para el Sheffield United - Aston Villa, que es el 11 de Diciembre (no me iba a ir de aqui sin ver un partido de fútbol, está claro!!). Y además aparte de Dublín ya estamos organizando un viajecito a Londres!! Ése sí que era el que me faltaba por hacer de verdad, y el más importante (si voy a Inglaterra y no paso por Londres, pues ya me dirás...). Así que ya tengo billete de bus, que ha salido por menos de 20 euros ida y vuelta; ahora falta el alojamiento. Iremos desde el jueves 30 de noviembre hasta el domingo 3 de Diciembre. Me voy a cansar de viajar tanto...

También he de añadir que el jueves pasado empezamos el torneo del PRO 5 en la residencia. Somos 12 equipos en tres grupos de cuatro. Se clasifican los dos primeros de cada grupo y los dos mejores terceros. Pablo y yo somos el equipo "One of these days", que básicamente lo pusimos así para chulear (uno de estos dias...nos ganáis!!xD) pero nos ha tocado el grupo más complicado, y sólo pudimos empatar el primer partido a cero, aunque tuvimos muchas ocasiones de gol, larguero incluido tras una falta mía con Juninho (llevábamos a Brasil). A ver que tal se dan los otros dos partidos, en teoría tendríamos que clasificarnos...la cosa promete, porque aparte de los españoles, que ya nos conocemos bien de tanto viciarnos en "El Local" de Pablo, hay gente que juega muy bien, la verdad.

After the great experience in Liverpool, I decided to purchase more tickets for other trips, and this week I went to the Lake District. It's the biggest and most visited national park in Britain. Our journey began in Windermere, where we made a 45-minute cruise through the lake. This time we were only three Spaniards: Rosa, Edurne (a girl from Tarragona I didn't know) and me. The cruise was great, everything really beautiful and impressing; it seemed like Finland sometimes. After that we went to the tourist information shop, where Edurne bought something that was supposed to be a map for a walk through the mountains. Well, we did the walk and it was amazing, but the map was utterly unhelpful!! (it was a map from 1999!!). You'll see the landscape views in the photos!

We were almost late for the bus, but finally managed to be on time and headed to Ambleside, in a different part of the Windermere Lake. The important places there were a waterfall of 21 metres and the area next to the lake. Everything beautiful again! We finished our trip exhausted, and after three hours in the bus and the now typical pizza in Bar One, we got our deserved rest.

Next week I will go to Stratford-upon-Avon, the place where Shakespeare was born and a nice town, it seems. We've also bought tickets for the match Sheffield Utd. - Aston Villa on December 11th. I couldn't go back to Spain without having enjoyed a football match in Britain, of course...And then, apart from the trip to Dublin, I'm going also to London!! That's the one I really wanted to do, because I've never been there, and you can't leave England without having been to London. For less than 20 euros I got the bus tickets and now we have to search for accommodation there. We are leaving on November 30th until Dec. 3rd. Too many trips!!!

Finally, I just want to mention that we have started a PRO 5 tournament (a football videogame) in our bar. There are 12 teams in three groups of four. The first two of each group and the best thirds classify for the playoffs. I play with Pablo, my friend from Sevilla, and our team is called "One of these days" (meaning one of these days you will beat us! hehe). So far we have played only one game and the result was 0-0, though we had a lot of opportunities to score...Anyway we should at least classify, since we are one of the best teams hehehe... let's see what happens next time!!

LIVERPOOL - 21 Octubre

Para ser la primera excursión que hago con la Union, no me puedo quejar: Liverpool es una pasada!!! Salimos a las ocho de la mañana, y después de más de dos horas de camino, nos dejaron a nuestro aire en el muelle, el Albert Dock, donde teníamos que volver a las 17.30. Desde allí el grupo de españoles nos fuimos hacia la Catedral, que es imponente desde fuera y bastante interesante por dentro, pasando antes por el cementerio de St. James, que como veréis en las fotos debe ser bastante espectacular por la noche. La verdad es que me gustó bastante, para ser un cementerio.

Después nos dirigimos hacia el centro de la ciudad, que me gustó mucho más que la de Sheffield, sinceramente. Liverpool es una ciudad imponente, mezclando edificios más clásicos con los modernos. Me gustó esa combinación...y por cierto, está lleno de chavales 'heavys' y 'emos', cosa que no pasa en Sheffield...

Antes de comer nos reunimos con Charlotte, una inglesa que estudia allí español y que conocían algunas chicas de nuestro grupo, que nos hizo de guía por la ciudad (aunque a veces parecía que sabía lo mismo que nosotros xDD). Así, tras reponer fuerzas en el McDonald's (la primera vez que voy desde que llegué...) decidimos ir directamente a la zona de los Beatles. Lo mejor fue visitar The Cavern, el club donde solían tocar ellos. Es bastante pequeño y sofocante, pero pudimos disfrutar de música en vivo y del ambiente del local, imaginando como debía ser aquello con los Beatles...Y tras pasar por las tiendas de souvenirs y descansar un poco en la cafetería, se nos hacía tarde y volvimos al punto de encuentro, el Albert Dock. De allí sólo pudimos ver las tiendas que hay, aunque hay como tres museos, uno de ellos el de los Beatles. Y por suerte sólo se puso a llover cuando ya nos íbamos de regreso a Sheffield, el resto del día hizo hasta calor.

Y ésta es la historia de mi pequeña excursión por Liverpool (ya me quedan menos ciudades por ver). Si puedo, haré todas las excursiones que pueda de entre las que quedan: mercados de navidad en Manchester y York; Windsor y Eton; Stratford-upon-avon, donde nació Shakespeare; el Lake District; algún día habrá que ir a Londres, claro...ya veremos!

Aunque aparte de eso ya hay un viaje más grande preparado: del 9 al 12 de Noviembre me voy a Dublín!!! Resulta que en esa semana no hay clases, asi que decidimos hacer algún viaje, y al final ha tocado Dublín, que me apetece muchísimo visitar. Ha salido bastante barato y estaremos en un hostal que esta muy bien valorado en Internet, el Isaac's Hostel. Ya contaré cosas en su momento!!

En cuanto a lo demás, básicamente lo mismo de siempre, aunque ahora ya empieza el trabajo de verdad. Para empezar, este martes tengo que hacer una presentación oral de un libro, la siguiente semana otra más, y aparte un 'essay' de comentario de texto para noviembre...ufff se acabó la buena vida jejeje. Y si antes me quejaba de que no había empezado el Tándem aún, ahora resulta que tengo no una, sino dos posibles compañeras: he contactado por fin con Lyndsay y quedaremos esta semana, y además Álvaro, un granadino de mi residencia, me ha dado el teléfono de otra inglesa que quiere aprender catalán, una tal Catherine. Ahora sí que me voy a hartar de catalán, esto será como Mallorca pronto!!!

I cannot complain about my first trip with the Students' Union: Liverpool was great!! We began our journey at 8 in the morning and after two hours we were left at Albert Dock, where we had to come back at 17.30. From there, our group of Spaniards went to see the Cathedral (which is huge seen from outside and even bigger inside), walking before through St. James' Cemetery, which must be very scary at night, as you will see in the photos. It was really beautiful, indeed.

After that we headed to the city centre, which I found better than Sheffield's one, to be honest. Liverpool is an amazing city, a mixture of classical and modern buildings. I liked that combination...and by the way, the city is full of 'emo' and 'heavy' teenagers, all dressed in black, something you won't find in Sheffield; quite shocking...

Before lunch we met Charlotte, a friend of some girls in our group who studies in Liverpool. She was supposed to be our guide, but sometimes it seeemed she knew as much as we did about the city!! So, after recovering our energy in McDonald's (not very original, but quite cheap! and the first time I go since I came here...) we went to the part of the city devoted to the memory of The Beatles. The best thing was to visit The Cavern, the pub where they used to play. It was quite small and oppressive, but we enjoyed some live music and a great atmosphere. And after buying some souvenirs and resting a little bit in a cafe, we decided to go back to the meeting point, since it was getting late. At Albert Dock we could only see some shops, but there are some museums there, such as The Beatles' one and the Tate Gallery. Luckily it only started to rain when we were almost entering the bus to go back to Sheffield; during the rest of the day it was quite sunny.

And that was the story of my trip to Liverpool! If I can, I will go to the rest of trips organized by the Union: Lake District (the most important national park in the UK), Stratford-upon-Avon (where Shakespeare was born), Christmas Markets in Manchester and York, Windsor & Eton, London someday...

But apart from that there is a bigger trip already planned: I am going to Dublin from 9 to 12 November!! That week we have no classes, so we decided to make any longer trip. The flight is quite cheap and we'll be staying in a hostel in the very city centre, very well considered in the net: the Isaac's Hostel. I will tell more in due time!!

Regarding the rest of things, basically everything goes as usual, though now hard work begins: I've got to prepare two oral presentations, one essay for November, keep on reading more books...bufff relax is over...And if before I complaint about the fact that I had not begun with my Tandem Project, now I've got two partners instead of one! I have to meet Lyndsay this week and also contact with Catherine, another English girl who wants to practice some Catalan. Alvaro, a friend from Granada, has given me her phone number, let's see if I can contact her. Now I will really get bored of Catalan, this will be almost like Mallorca soon!!

Cuando ya creía que no podría volver a tocar hasta Diciembre, estando en Palma, resulta que he conseguido un bajo (es incluso mejor que el que tengo en casa!!!). Por lo visto se pueden alquilar instrumentos y cámaras en la Union, así que pagando un depósito que luego me devuelven conseguí el bajo y un ampli. Ya he estado probándolo y suena muy bien, la verdad. El primer día ya estuve tocando un poco con Jorge, mi vecino vasco, al que se le da muy bien la guitarra. Ya nos pondremos de acuerdo para aprendernos alguna canción juntos jejeje.

Aparte de esto, ya empiezo a pillarle el punto a las clases e intervenir más en ellas. Se están poniendo interesantes, la verdad, normalmente no me aburro...aunque todavía me falta empezar el 'Tandem Learning' en Catalán, ya va siendo hora.

Por cierto, que el otro día descubrí una tienda en el centro, PRIMARK, donde me compraré toda la ropa que me haga falta, porque es muy barato: me compré una camisa de manga corta por 3£ y una sudadera por 10£. Un día de éstos iré otra vez. Ese mismo día fui a comer al Cavendish con gente de mi residencia, y me encantó el sitio. Te puedes sentar en los sofás, la comida está muy bien y no es caro. Además, a mí me ganaron nada más entrar porque ponen vídeos de música por la tele y al llegar yo estaban sonando Deftones...

Este último sábado estuvo bastante bien, porque fuimos a la 'Intro Party' jeje aunque la música no me interesa, estuvo divertido, sobretodo antes de salir de la resi, toda la 'Spanish Crew' reunida en el jardín de botellón...

Ah! Y ya compré la entrada para MOTÖRHEAD también, así que ya voy a tres conciertos; y la semana q viene a Liverpool!! A ver que tal...

When I thought I couldn't play until December, back home, I managed to get a bass guitar and it's even better than mine!! (see photos above). They told me that one can hire instruments or cameras at the Union, so I went there and paid a deposit which they will give me back when I bring them the bass back again. They also gave me a guitar amplifier, so now I can play at my room. I've already played a little bit with Jorge, another Spanish student from Euskadi, who plays his guitar really well. We'll try to learn some songs together in the future.

Apart from that, I'm enjoying my classes as I'm starting to talk more in them. Most of them are interesting, I rarely get bored...though I still have to begin with Tandem Learning in Catalan.

By the way, last week I discovered a shop called Primark where everything is very cheap: I bought a T-shirt for 3£ and a sweatshirt for 10£. I will buy all the clothes I may need there from now on! On the same day I had lunch at the Cavendish with some people from my residence, and I really liked the place. You can sit on sofas, the food is quite good (and cheap as well) and they show music videos on TV: I loved it since I entered the place, because the video that they were showing then was from the Deftones...

This Saturday was quite good, since we went to an 'Intro Party'. I didn't like the music, but it was quite a funny night, above all when everyone in the 'Spanish Crew' were in the garden of the residence, about to go to the party.

And I have also bought a ticket for MOTÖRHEAD's gig in November!! So I will go to three concerts, and next week to Liverpool!
